McKenzie produces spectacular 15-second knockout

The new light-heavyweight Commonwealth champion

OVILL MCKENZIE 19-11 (8 KO’s) returned in spectacular fashion has he powered through Jeff Evans 8-2-1 (1) in 15 seconds to win the Commonwealth light-heavyweight division.

The Jamaican-born fighter regained the belt he lost back in 2007 to Dean Francis at the North Bridge Leisure Centre in Halifax in his first fight back since his defeat to Tony Bellew.

McKenzie made the perfect statement on his comeback and will continue to be the avoided opponent in the light-heavyweight division.

The Derby-based boxer took only 13 seconds to land the vital punch which led to the referee stopping the fight as Evans looked to have been knocked out before he hit the canvas. As the stunned Welshman hung off the edge of the ring, McKenzie celebrated a second professional title.

The questions then turned to what next for McKenzie with a Bellew rematch having been touted around before the bout. Former European cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli makes his light-heavyweight bow next weekend, if he comes through unscathed McKenzie’s trainer Jason Shinfield believes it could be a possible match-up, “Let’s see if he comes through his fight next week, until then he can talk all he likes, if he wants a shot at Ovill he will need to come to Derby. We won’t be going to Wales.

Ovill has to always go to other places; he is now the champion if people want a shot they will have to come to us.”

McKenzie though is willing to take on anyone and says it is up to others to decide what is next, “I would like anything. I will leave it to my manager and my trainer, they are the ones that do the match making.”

The 31-year-old will be hoping his next fight will be a little bit different from when he first won the Commonwealth belt as he lost the title in his first defence.
