Miguel Cotto has stopped Antonio Margarito in their rematch and retained his WBA Super Welterweight title after the ringside doctor called an end to the fight after  round 9.

Margarito’s right eye (which a bone was broken in the Pacquaio fight a year earlier) was opened up in round 3 by Cotto and midway through round 7 it had fully closed over.

After a detailed examination by the NYSAC doctors the eye was declared unfit for the fight to continue. There was some doubt on the venue leading up to the fight as Margarito had problems getting his licence in New York due to his eye injury.

Miguel Cotto boxed smart, using his jab and holding on the inside which is something that he didn’t do in the 1st fight with Margarito where he suffered a loss. It was a workman like performance by Cotto who continued to pick away at Margarito and fully deserved the victory.

At the time of the stoppage all 3 judges had scored the fight to Cotto 89-82

Rios Too Strong For Murray

After being forced to vacate his WBA Lightweight title at the scales for being too heavy, Brandon Rios punished Manchester’s, John Murray with an 11th round stoppage.

The title was only on the line for Murray who didn’t take a step back early but come round 6 Murray started to take damage and he suffered a cut on his face.

Rios wore his man down late with  a series of hard uppercuts and the ref was forced to stop the bout at 2:06 of the 11th round after the cut was too severe and Murray was taking too much damage.

Rodriguez Wins In Explosive Rematch

In a rematch from a fight of the year contender from the ESPN Friday Night Fight series in July Delvin Rodriguez and Pawel Wolak stepped back into the ring after a draw in their previous encounter.

Rodriguez fought beautifully landing beautiful punch combinations on the chin of Wolak as well as under and over punch combinations.

While Pawel Wolak came forward landing good punches on the inside he also showed courage coming forward absorbing the punches of Rodriguez.

In the 10th and final round Rodriguez closed the show stunning Wolak with a series of hard under and over punch combinations, almost dropping  his man. Rodriguez landed 65 power punches in the 10th round.

The judges scored the bout (98- 89, 98-90, 100-90) to Rodriguez who also picked up the International Boxing Association Intercontinental Light Middleweight title.

Jones Defeats Lujan On Points

Mike Jones has retained his NABA and WBO NABO Welterweight titles with a 12 round unanimous decision victory over Sebastian Andres Lujan.

Jones with the size advantage was moving Lujan around the ring pushing him onto the ropes. Lujan continued to come forward but walked into some strong shots by Jones.

The judges scored the fight (118-110 | 119-109 | 119-109) with the fight also being an eliminator for the vacant IBF Welterweight Title.
