New Addington’s former amateur boxing star Gareth Gardner has promised to deliver fireworks when he steps through the ropes on November 26th and says he is relishing the opportunity to take on Tooting’s Luke Dawson in the UK’s premier boxing league.
Boxing since the age of nine, Gardner will be entering the league off the back of an impressive career in the unpaid ranks that saw the twenty seven year old represent England school boys against Russia and represent the south east and London in many major tournaments, and now with his sights firmly set on emulating his amateur success in the league feels that his time has come to really shine again.
“ I love this sport and this fight is a great chance for me to showcase my skills. It did get a little bit frustrating in the amateurs with the lack of opportunities that were being presented to me, but I think my style of fighting is really going to suit the league and everyone who will be there to support me will be in for a fantastic night”.
The man opposing Gardner also brings to the table an impressive amateur resume, and with nearly eighty amateur contests under his belt before joining the league has promised to spoil the New Addington native’s debut and send him home empty handed.
However, Gardner seems unfazed by the task at hand and says even though his opponent will enter the bout with both height and reach advantages its not something he’s worried about.
“ I know Dawson is taller and posses the superior reach, but I actually think that is going to work to my advantage. I like to come in ducking and diving and put the pressure on my opponents so with Dawson being taller I think my plans will work better”
Gardner continues, “ The plan is to stay calm and not give him any room to move and I think if I can do that then I’ve got a great chance. With boxing anything can happen and it only takes one punch to change a fight, but I promise you will see some fireworks on the night “.
